yet another Solavellan playlist: melodic death metal edition!
due to my Agonies I have made this very specific playlist curated to my own tastes, but it's public in case there's any other metalheads out here... to be fair some of these are heavy/doom/gothic metal bands, but the songs all have the right Vibe. If you don't like harsh vocals/growling, you can still enjoy songs 4-8, 13, and 15-20 fyi ;)
Song/story breakdown:
1-2: Solas awakens 3: Discovering the past 4: Dread Wolf's legacy 5: Lavellan reaching out 6-7: Falling in love in a dream 8-9: Solas' guilt 10-11: Relationship ending 12: No more distractions 13-14: Love and regret 15: Duty over self 16: Post-breakup breakdowns 17: Sorrow into resolve 18: Greatest fears 19: After leaving/Lavellan's farewell 20: In another world

Seeing me spill my thoughts and talk about Tmnt 2012, you might know that there's a certain little robot that I love very much.
Yes, I'm talking about Metalhead.
I've always been very fond of this little guy, and perhaps that's why it makes me sad, that I barely see anyone talk about him or his relationship with Donnie and how it actually shifted.
When Donnie first built Metalhead in season 1 episode 6, he did so to use him as a weapon.
That episode was all about Donnie feeling useless because he "only" wields a bo staff, while his brothers have katanas, sais and nunchuks to fight with. He built Metalhead as a weapon to help them fight, especially in moments when it would be too dangerous for them to go out onto the battlefield. At that point, Metalhead was nothing more than just another invention, a drone as Donnie called him (at least that's what he said in the German dub when I watched it two days ago, shshsjsh).
Tumblr media
And at the end of the episode, when Metalhead went rogue under the Kraangs control and Donnie had to take him out, did he feel down because his invention failed.
Tumblr media
He was sad, because the machine he built did not live up to his expectations. Metalhead was nothing more than just a invention. We only saw him sprinkled into the background for a few episodes and the only truly more remarkable appearance was in the season 1 finale, but it again wasn't a whole lot.
But then it got interesting.
Because starting with season 2, it was revealed in "Metalhead rewired", that Donnie put an AI (artificial intelligence) into Metalhead and it actually shows.
It might've only been revealed in episode 11, but back in episode 4 "Mutagen Man unleashed", Metalhead has been put into the background doing various tasks such as moving stuff/cleaning up:
Tumblr media
Sitting on the floor like some human child:
Tumblr media
And actually talking to Donnie, to which his creator is actually responding.
Tumblr media
"Yup, it's a mess, Metalhead."
It wasn't yet revealed, but it's obvious Metalhead wasn't as mindless anymore than he was back in season 1. Remember: back then, Donnie was still controlling him via game controller like some RC car.
Now Metalhead is thinking for himself, talking to his creator, reacting to the outside world and feeling more alive than he's ever been. He turned his head, when Leo, Raph and Mikey came in. He noticed the lab was a mess and let Donnie know, just like a human child would.
And it's obvious Donnies view about Metalhead has changed too. If before he only saw him as a weapon or drone, he now thinks of him as another team member, or even his son.
In "Metalhead rewired" he didn't wanna believe Metalhead could be evil or possibly working for the Kraang. And he didn't think that way, because the "weapon" could be stolen and turned against them, but because he actually loved Metalhead the way one would love their sibling or child. He's actually grown to love him.
When Metalhead got electrocuted by hacking himself into that Kraangs wending-machine, Donnie was shown patting the robots head and calling him "buddy", something he wouldn't have done in season one ever.
Tumblr media
That only makes the plot of "Metalhead rewired" more heartbreaking.
Metalhead had grown to Donnie and now he had to let him go. His little robot creation wasn't going to make it out. He had to leave him behind in that Kraang facility, there was nothing he could do.
Tumblr media
No matter how painful it was for Donnie, he had to leave without Metalhead. And it did not help, that the only part making it out alive was his head.
He's absolutely heartbroken about his loss, cradling the remaining part in his hands.
Tumblr media
The fact that you can actually see Donnies sadness about losing his friend, hits harder than any of Raphs punches ever could.
Donnie was actively griefing about Metalhead. In a way we do when losing a beloved person, because that's what happened. He practically lost a son, a brother, a friend. Metalhead grew to be so much more than just a lifeless robot. He grew a personality and built a relationship with Donnie.
Donnies relationship with Metalhead switched from creator and creation to father and son, brother and brother or friend and friend, depending on how you like to picture them.
Tumblr media
I think that is why I love these two so much. And I also believe people seem to overlook this change of heart between them. Donnie and Metalhead had a special bond, that has been broken, at least physically, but I know that our favorite genius will never forget his robotic child. Ever.
---
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, I gotta ramble about this real quick, ssaadfhssd.

metalhead men are so funny i love them sm bc typically they’re the sweetest and most understanding chivalrous guys u will ever meet. like my dear metalhead work friend who opens doors for me, tells me to get home safe, asks me how i'm feeling, bought me cookies from the vending machine one time bc i was sad & crying during a terrible shift, insisted to buy me lunch bc i didn't bring anything from home and i hadn't eaten anything at all that day. but then i'll walk up to him in the storeroom and be like "hey bro whatcha listening to?" and he'll be like "this song called 'cacophony of organs trapped in a ceiling fan' its sooo good ^_^" and then like he’ll show me his slam metal vocals he’s been working on. genuine metalhead men i will always love you yall have a special place in my heart <3

I forgot an incredibly important band that belongs on the list!! Queensrÿche!
I cannot believe I forgot about them, they are actually one of the bands that helped introduce me to rock and metal! Most of their songs are about corruption and things like addiction, heartbreak and death. They have this INCREDIBLE concept album called "Operation: Mindcrime." and it tells an interesting story. "Operation Mindcrime tells the story of a recovering drug addict called Nikki who is tired of how corrupt the society he lives in is, and ends up becoming a sleeper agent for an underground revolutionary movement that deals in assassinating political figures."
This album and so many of their other songs have a Fallout feel to them. Queensrÿche is getting very close to the realm of divorced dad rock, but
Songs and bands that I think belong in Fallout
Most of these are heavy metal or rock! So be prepared :)
*"Let's Hang Together" - by Twin Temple. (This band is described as Satanic doo wop and their tune and vibe matches Fallout perfectly. Older sounding music but with a darker vibe.)
*The album called "Hail the Apocalypse" - by the band Avatar. This album has a couple of apocalypse related songs. This album (And the band) really reminds me of the perk Wild Wasteland. The apocalypse is a dangerous and brooding place, but there's a certain level of wackiness and uneasiness to it all. Kind of like a Freak Show.
Smells Like a Freak Show is actually the name of a song on another Avatar album. It also makes me think of Fallout, mainly raiders. The album is called the Black Waltz. The song "Smells Like a Freakshow" Makes me think of The Pack in Nuka World lol
*Every single one of Bon Jovi's songs. Every single one, especially the album "Slippery When Wet."
*Iron Maiden. I really enjoy how they sing about history, war, folklore, stories, etc. All of their songs are incredible, but some of them really fit the Fallout vibes. The song "When The Wild Wind Blows" Is a very emotional and moving song about the end of the world. The world ends in that song by nukes, just like in fallout. Even if you don't like metal I still suggest reading the lyrics, Iron maiden has some incredible story telling.
*Megadeth! They have numerous songs about the apocalypse, how much war sucks, and how the government is terrible. Perfectly fitting for Fallout. Just prepare yourself for the lead singers voice lol
*Black Sabbath - One of the founding fathers of rock. A lot of their songs protest war and the government. Their song "War Pigs" is fitting for fallout's world, along with many others.
*The rest of the "Unholy Trinity" and founding fathers of heavy metal. Led Zepplin and Deep purple.
*Maybe other classic rock bands and singers, like Kansas, Aeorsmith, Heart, Rolling stones, Cheap Trick, and Motley Crue. But these bands are getting awfully close to the divorced dad rock category so always keep that in mind.
*Dangerous Toys (A lot of the rock bands/hairbands that took a more humorous turn really remind me of Fallout. A few Dangerous Toys songs remind me of the radio host "Redeye" from Nuka World's raider radio. Mainly the songs "Gimme' No Lip" and "Teas'n Pleas'n"
*I really want to say Slipknot and Nu metal as a whole. I know Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and System of A Down don't fit Fallout as well as some of the other bands and songs. But the idea of hearing "Break Stuff" While out in the wastes is very entertaining to me.
*Metallica (Just their vibes and sound feel so right for the universe of fallout. Their songs are often about struggles and intense emotions like despair and grief.
*Maybe bands that are nuclear apocalypse and similar themed. Like Nuclear Assault, Municipal Waste, and many more.
*This is more of a headcanon: I love the idea of Pre-bombs Fallout having a large punk/hardcore scene, and lots and lots of Hippies. Just so many people out there doing drugs/chems, living life, protesting war and writing music.
These are just some of the bands that I think would fit into Fallout! If you think I left something out then comment the band/singer! If you have any thoughts/headcanons please share those as well!!

In reference to my last reblog that was HLVRAI themed - I know the muse will grab me by the throat this year once more when HLRAI 2 happens and it'll unearth my Metalhead Gordon AU so I finish it properly.
There's actually a bunch of art and writing for it that I've kept to myself for a while, including a good chunk of my "Taste of Metal" fanfic rewrite.
You all will see my detailed thoughts on Kaiju!Benrey in it. That's a promise and a threat.

I do not care about canon or what DC says, Black Canary sings metal, or at least rock. (And for the uncultured people, metal isn't just screaming. Go listen to Ghost In The Rain by Beast In Black, their singer has been gifted by the gods)
Firstly, she has the look, the aesthetic for it. She would have some great costumes. Secondly, it's usual to have trouble hearing for days after a metal concert, so it fits her power very well.

Okay so! I love the music in Fallout, I really do! But I just feel like metal would fit in so well! I know rock/metal can seem more "Mad Max" but a lot of things in Fallout really give me that vibe! Raiders and a few other groups especially. Like you cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that Porter Gage wouldn't love Five finger Death Punch or something else angry like Pantera.
Before I get into the music in the wasteland I have to tell you how metal formed in the first place! So metal and all forms of rock, all the way to punk and goth, started with old fashioned rock & roll. Music that developed in the 1950's from game changers like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and many many others. The Fallout universe is very different from our world, but it still has some of these stars like Elvis and Buddy Holly. So this means the foundation for metal was already beginning.
Now I know most branches of rock and metal began in the 70's and 80's, the first real rock bands beginning in the late 60's early 70's. (Led Zeppelin in 1968 and Black Sabbath in 1970 are great examples) A lot of the subgenera's like punk, goth, glam, folk, power, and nu formed later on. These rang anywhere from glam hairbands in the 80's to the Nu metal wave of the late 90's and early 00's. There is just such an incredible amount of variety in the world of rock and metal. The Fallout world may have a bit less variety but the idea of punk and heavy metal in the wasteland is just so perfect to me.
The Fallout universe has a wildly different timeline and series of events from our world; but this kind of music formed from civil unrest and tensions. Like shortages and war. The fallout universe, both pre and post total atomic annihilation, is full of unrest and war. So to me it would make so much sense for their to be metal in fallout.
A lot of raiders and similar groups give me major heavy metal punk vibes. The brotherhood even has heavy metal vibes! A lot of music and instruments get lost in time in Fallout, but people can get quite creative. A great example is the Nu metal band Slipknot! They use an old beer keg and a baseball bat to add a unique sound to their music. I could see raiders, and really any wastelands coming up with new creative ideas for instruments.
I really dig the idea of Ghouls and anyone else who survived the war having lots of information and skill when it comes to some instruments and music. Maybe some even share their information and teach others. I also just really enjoy the idea of a punk ghoul, dressed head to toe like they're on their way to the heaviest concert of their life. Like an original punk, one who hates the government and likes leather.
A great example of how rock/metal could fit in the wasteland perfectly is Redeye in Nuka World. Sure, he sorta kinda sucks, but the potential is there. He really reminds me of some of the old 80's hairbands. The lyrics aren't that strong and the singing isn't the best, but damn it sure is catchy. Redeye really reminds me of some certain rock songs. There is a song called Teas'n Pleas'n by a rock band called Dangerous Toys. They mostly make songs on the more humorous side and a lot of their songs seem to fit well with raiders personalities.
I love the cowboy vibes that Fallout has, especially when playing New Vegas. I really love the cowboy songs, but I also love metal. I feel like the two kinds of music would have major crossovers into one another, especially in the wasteland. Folk rock seems very much like Fallout to me.
A song that would fit so well in Fallout is the Black Sabbath song "War Pigs."
I have a lot of songs in mind that I think would fit Fallout if you guys want me to include them!!
If you have any thoughts please share!
I have so many ideas and headcanons about rock/metal music in the Fallout universe
Would anyone like to hear about it 👀
